Last year we had Jose Abreu sign with the White Sox before the World Series was over. We just had Yasmany Thomas sign with the D-Backs. My thought is he should be out up for bidding with other free agents since it is after the season ended. I need your thoughts. Please reply below. Jeff has rights to Arizona, so he should probably abstain. Thanks!

I would say he's a FA. FA took affect as soon as the WS was over (2014 season ended) all MLB contracts ended then also.

Free agency. But either way is fine with me.

What about Runsey Castillo that signed in August?

Free agency. Castillo signed and was playing last season, so he was available for pickup. I think anyone who signed before the WS ended is on that team. Others should be FA's

I would like to develop a consistent policy for players from Cuba or anywhere else. It is sounding like if they sign after the WS, you are ok with them being a FA. What about during the season? Not all make it to MLB like R Castillo. Should they be free to the first taker or fall under ownership rights of the club (meaning whoever has rights to bosox players gets him)? Thoughts?

First taker. They aren't drafted or signed to be part of the minor league system. Certainly, some are, but generally MLB treats them as Free Agents, so I'd vote we do the same.

I'm just little put off because last year I wanted Abreu and had to trade for him because he was given to the White Sox. Yet this year two of my teams have signed Cuban players and I'm not allowed to pick up either, they're just free agents? There needs to be a standard. It's disappointing that one is given and the other is up for grabs.

I can't totally disagree, Jeff. That is why it would be good to have something consistent. Looking for others to share thoughts.

I agree there needs to be something consistent. This is me just thinking out loud... Plan A. In another salary league we have a international draft (Cuba, Japan, etc). Like the FA draft, It could be done around the same time the FA draft takes place. Use slotting and have 2 or 3 rounds adding a few $ to teams salary. Order of draft is reverse of last season winning pct. and each slot is give a $ value. Once the season starts any player that signs to a MLB contact, he belongs to the team he signs with up to the end of the WS. Here is a link on international slotting for players www.baseballamerica.com/international/2014-15-mlb-international-bonus-pools-and-slot-values/. Plan B. After last game of World Series, rosters are frozen and any player signed by a team, as a FA, he's still a FA in our league. This includes all international players. Plan C Any International player signed belong to the team he signs with. Open Up ....

I don't care how it shakes out. My only vote is that we ignore Abreu and Guerrero when doing it. We were drafting franchises at that point, something we won't do again. I don't get to keep Vmart, Brian doesn't get to keep Laroche or Butler. Off season acquisitions seem like free agents to me. But I'm good with whatever conclusion.

I'm open to anything and I get we didn't start this league until last year. Castillo signed in August though, which is a during season move, where at Tomas was just now signed. The decision needs to be made how we're handling the different situations.

I would vote for any international player having to be bid on during free agency

My only thing about Castillo is that he was signed during the season, and played for the red sox in 2014. That makes him eligible for pickup just like any other player who was not owned since everyone had a shot at him. The big difference between Castillo and Abreu is that Abreu was signed when the season was ended.

So basically if your franchise doesn't make the playoffs and signs a Cuban, he's your player as long as the regular season is over but the World Series is not. Otherwise he's free to be picked up by whomever or bid on during FA.

How about we just make it policy that any international FA must be bid on, regardless of the time of year they sign?
